Modes of Interpreting - consecutive, whispered...

Consecutive interpreting is where the interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker has finished speaking and is our most popular method of interpreting. The speech is divided into segments and the interpreter listens as the speaker delivers the message. When the speaker pauses, the interpreter relays the message in the target language.

Whispered interpreting is where the interpreter sits or stands next to a small target-language audience whilst whispering a simultaneous interpretation. This is often used when the majority of a group speaks the source language and only one or two people in the target audience require interpretation.

Simultaneous / Conference interpreting is where the interpreter speaks at the same time as the speaker. This method of interpreting is more formal and is used at larger meetings and conferences only. Sitting in sound-proof booths, two interpreters alternate at approximately fifteen minute intervals delivering the message via a microphone to audience members who are wearing microphones.
